The official Wild Blueberries organization calls the wild-grown blueberry the “blueberriest blueberry” and the “better blueberry.” According to their website, wild blueberries have 2x the antioxidants of cultivated blueberries, thanks to a higher concentration in the flavonoid anthocyanin.

Maine is the largest producer of wild blueberries in the world. Maine produces 10 percent of all blueberries in North America, including both wild and cultivated production.

In the US, highbush blueberries grow in 26 states, from California to Michigan to Florida, but wild blueberries are almost exclusively found in Maine. The state produces 99% of the country's lowbush blueberries and 40% of the world's supply, according to a study published by the University of Maine.

Reason One: The Wild Blueberry Has A Short Season. The wild blueberry has an incredible short season lasting only a few weeks. It usually runs from the middle or latter part of August until the middle part of September. Fresh berries have a short shelf life so they seldom appear too far from where they are harvested.
